Silver Honors Stone: The Work of Julian Lovato

Silver Honors Stone, curated by Henrietta Lidchi and Deborah C. Slaney, is the first solo exhibition dedicated to jeweler Julian Lovato (Santo Domingo, 1925–2018). The exhibition traces Lovato’s prolific career and influence on Native American jewelry throughout the twentieth century.

The visual language of the exhibition and booklet responds to the forms and design of Lovato’s work. Referencing the stones, “O” counters in the title are filled in and circular shapes are used throughout. Design elements also echo the silver settings that surround the stones while geometric compositions and symmetry reflect Lovato’s approach to drawing the eye inward. An earthy and metallic palette complements the material qualities of the jewelry.
